Shields Reviews

Rebecca
We liked the space and location of this house. Theres an amazing bakery around the corner on Helvellyn St, and town Derwentwater is a really short walk away. Recommended!
Jeanette
Really well equipped and comfortable property. Appreciated thoughtful gesture of welcome coffee, tea and biccies. When the weather is nice the well maintained outside space would be a boon. A real home from home with everything you need. Not sure why but WiFi seemed to be slow at times. Also some curtain tracks arent working properly lounge and first floor twin bedroom. Recommend entirely.
The house is in a great location, being about a 10minute walk into Keswick. Parking can be an issue outside the property, and it was difficult when unloading the car. The house itself was very nice. It was really well equipped with more than enough of everything plenty of plates, cutlery, etc. The welcome tray with biscuits, tea and coffee was a lovely touch too. The beds were comfortable, although the pillows were a little firm for our liking. It did get cold in the night, but extra blankets were provided. The front bedroom at the top of the house was very cold, even when the heating was on. The lower bedrooms were fine. One grumble was the shower on the top floor, which had very poor pressure. Because of this, we all used the downstairs shower, which wasnt ideal. The handle on the door of the upper shower room was broken when we arrived, resulting in one of our party getting trapped inside. Luckily, we eventually heard the calls for help. This was fixed within hours of being reported, which was really efficient. We would stay here again if the price was right. It was quite expensive for the halfterm week when we visited.
Fantastic time in the lakes Sheilds cottage had everything we needed Will be back again
Alexandra
Gorgeous house very spacious with great facilities and a really good location. Could walk into the town centre in under 10 minutes. Our family of five had a wonderful Christmas week and would highly recommend Shields to anyone.
This is a lovely spacious spotlessly clean house warm and comfortable with an amazingly well equipped kitchen. Its easy walking distance from Keswick shops , the lake and lovely walks . We had a really great time here
Timothy
Pleasant and comfortable property in a peaceful area. Wellequipped kitchen. Beds comfortable.
Jonathan
We had a great week at Shields. The house was comfortable and wellappointed. The sofas and beds were comfortable and the showers were spacious and powerful. The cottage was ideally situated within easy walking distance of Keswick centre, and we took advantage of the many coffee, sandwich and pasty shops. Also a perfect base for getting to the many walking routes. We could also enjoy spending time in the cottage, after returning from our walks. The kitchen was wellequipped, with numerous plates, bowls and mugs, so larger family groups would have no issues. Could perhaps do with a few more tea spoons and a couple of sharp knives. We had a very minor issue with one of the blind pullcords breaking, which we reported to the local office, just down the road, but this was no inconvenience. We would have no problem returning to Shields again.
Lovely clean property in a great location
We have very much enjoyed our stay. The location and price of the property enable flexibility, which works well for our family. The house offers all the necessary amenities, including a fire, to make our stay a genuine reset.
Judith
Fantastic, spacious holiday home with everything you could possibly need . In a great location for walking into Keswick where we enjoyed visiting the restaurants, pubs and shops. Always managed to find parking in front of the house or very near by. Would recommend.
Catherine
We all really enjoyed staying in Shields. It was lovely and cosy and served our needs very well. The kitchen was well equipped other than no whisk for making the Yorkshire puddings!
Leslie
Home from home, everything we could have hoped for, a lovely pre Christmas break with family. The house is well maintained, kitchen is well equipped and all lovely and clean. A few small negatives, the fire could do with a guard, especially if there are young children staying, the 9am check out time is too early and having to strip beds prior to leaving does not help, other than that it can't be faulted and we are looking to book again for next year.

Lovely, spacious house, perfect for our family group. We thought the kitchen was very well equipped, allowing us to enjoy some excellent meal times. Our only issue was we found the kingsize bed on the first floor too firm for us. There was a problem with the twin room door handle but this was fixed by the maintenance team.
Matthew
Lovely cottage, really well equipped and spotlessly clean. We had a lovely week. Perfect for our dog too!
Property was perfect for our stay. Kitchen had everything we needed and more. Beds very comfortable and rooms a good size. Its a shame one room only has a 23 bed as the property could be for 8. Nice to have 2 bathrooms. Open plan downstairs makes the property light throughout. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, location perfect. We hope to book again.
Danielle
Beautiful house in ideal location for the local amenities. Very well equipped kitchen and comfortable throughout. Plenty to keep you occupied in the house should the weather be less favourable, including the little people! Would recommend the property itself if booked privately BUT. Such a shame that when the key snapped in the door lock shortly before 9pm on the Wednesday of our stay, the emergency contacts were uncontactable, effectively leaving a 4 year old child and the rest of the family on the streets. Despite leaving 2 voicemails on the emergency contact answerphones nobody ever got back to us and we were left to climb through a first floor insecure window to gain access to the property. It was again left to us to chase the agents the following day to arrange repair of the lock. This was in complete contrast to what felt like them harassing us following a family emergency and unavoidably having to leave our dog contained in their crate for a short period of time during daytime hours. 3 online messagesemails plus a phone call regarding the same matter is rather excessive when they cant even respond to a real cause for concern!

The house was lovely. The oven rangemaster was really good, best oven I've ever used. Was disappointed that one of the beds was a 34 bed, maybe I misread the description but meant 2 of us ended up in the single beds. Only issue we found frustrating was just one key for front and back door. We didn't want to leave the gate unlatched and use back door but as there were 6 of us we did not all enter and leave together. We love Keswick and had a great week there.

We had a lovely stay at Shields. The cottage was very clean and wellequipped, in a great, central location. Unfortunately, our stay has been tarnished by the poor service provided after our holiday. In our rush to leave the property at the early checkout time 9am, with our two elderly relatives, two children and dog, and having followed the required COVID guidelines to strip the beds and bag up the used towels etc, we mistakenly left a number of high value items in one of the bathrooms. As soon as we realized, we tried to contact Sykes, but were unable to speak to anyone. Instead, we were directed to the online portal where we logged the left items. It is now approaching three weeks since we checked out of the accommodation, and despite several messages via the portal, Sykes is unable to let to us whether the items have been located. After spend a significant amount of money on the accommodation, I am extremely disappointed with the level of service that has been provided by Sykes.
Really great property, clean and spacious, loved the amount of cutlery and platesdishes etc. We had elderly people in our party and what would be really helpful would be a short handrail on the right of the few stairs that lead into the bathroom. they didn't feel secure going up and down the steps. Thanks.
We had a lovely stay at shields but we feel we have to mention the bathroom and bedroom on the 1st floor are not on the same level ie. 2 steps down and 4 up a bit of a concern with elderly parents during the night. We also felt the 4pm check in is too late and 9 am check out time is early as generally the times are normally 3pm 10am. The stripping of the all the beds before we leave also eats into these times. I feel we need to move on now from the Covid 19 reminders in every bedroom. Having said all that I would recommend Shields and would like to come back and visit in the future.
Excellent property with everything you need, nice courtyard. The only issue was the check out time of 09.00 am too early when you have 4 small children 10.00 would have been better
Top bedrooms very cold as heating struggles to warm rooms. Consider additional heaters and blanket for bed. The rest of property is really nice and works well for 4 adults. Property is nice and clean, we stayed here last year. Kitchen is very well provided for with great cooker.
Andrea
Our second time at Shields. Its lovely. Has everything you need for a lovely holiday. Would love to go again next year but its 400.00 more expensive than this year which is an increase of over 20 so far too much I am afraid which is a shame. The only snag was I asked for a change of bedding as we had a cross over with one of our sons but was told it was an extra charge which again I felt was a bit too much We will be back in an off peak month though as its one of the best houses we have stayed in
Madeline
Beautiful home. Only negative is being asked to strip beds when on holiday.
It was superb tbf. Great property for the six adults & the pup . Great location , with superb facilities . We'd deffinitely go back . Overall a solid 8.5 10 in my view. Sykes were spot on as well 1st time we've used them & we'd wholeheartedly recommend them
We have had a great stay. The property is spacious, well resourced and presented. Its close to both the town centre and the local park which was handy to access the local amenities. Highly recommend
We loved our stay at Sheilds everything was just perfect. The house was impeccably clean and comfortably updated. We were a party of 6 5 adults and 1 teen and the house provided plenty of comfortable gathering space, as well as enough room for everyone to have some privacy. The beds were super comfortable, the kitchen was spacious and had everything needed for cooking we could have moved right in. The location was great for everything we wanted to do and it was quiet at night. Parking was fine, we were always able to find a spot nearby though I imagine it is more difficult in summer. Upon arrival, we were told by the cleaning crew that Sheilds is one of the bestkept houses in Keswick, and we all agree! Thanks for a wonderful stay!!
Great house. Very clean. Will be back hopefully soon.
Meranda
A welcoming comfortable holiday home with everything you would require for a great stay. Every possible kitchen utensil and good quality pans with a large range cooker and multiple ovens. Rooms are all large, bright and airy with great showers in the bathrooms too. There is also a cute small courtyard back garden. Spotlessly clean when we arrived. First time I have booked with Sykes and I was impressed with the high quality finish at Shields and the cleanliness of the cottage compared with others previously booked with other companies. A great stay in Keswick and a wonderful holiday in the Lake District!
Andrew
Lovely townhouse that met all our expectations and more. Great location to walk into Keswick, but set within a quiet street. The property had every amenity we needed with the bonus of good internet speed. Will definitely be back!
Perfect Holiday House
Lovely large cottage , well appointed , very clean and comfortable. Looked like it had been recently renovated . Thank you for the treats on arrival. Well located and parking for 3 cars without any difficulty at this time of year would book again
Stayed at Shields for the week. Parking was difficult outside on the Friday as a lot of people use the free parking in the roads outside. I imagine in holiday weeks its not that easy. The house however is great! A second set of keys would have been nice rather than keep putting them in lock box. Both front door locks are not great and need changing to make getting into the house a bit easier. There were only 4 of us staying in the property so facilities were really good for us . Kitchen well stocked with pans etc . Cooker looked brand new and so was everything else. Bathrooms immaculate and property very clean and commutable. We would definitely book this property again. thank you
Alison
Loved our stay at Shields, this is a fabulous property only a 5 minute walk to the centre of Keswick. The house itself was spotlessly clean with everything provided for a comfortable stay. Although there were 6 of us plus a dog, we all had more than enough room to relax and have our own space. I can't recommend highly enough 5 stars!
One of the top holiday homes we have ever stayed in! Good location, very well equipped, beautifully furnished and very clean. Oh and the weather was great too!
Andrew
A lovely property with a modern feel to it, with thought and quality in mind. Not a bad word to be said we had a fabulous week, well supported by Shields.
Gareth
A very well equipped house in an ideal location. A good range of books, games and DVD.s
